Today, Tony Abbott overtakes Billy McMahon as Australia’s 20th longest serving Prime Minister. Since Federation, Australia has had 28 Prime Ministers.

One year and 270 days in the job, Mr Abbott is also ahead of Cook, Reid, Watson, Faddon, McEwan, Page and Forde in the Prime Ministerial longevity stakes.

It will not be until August that Mr Abbott moves to number 19, ahead of Holt.

It is interesting to look at the longevity of Australia’s Prime Ministers. Only 7 have served more than 5 years, and 11 have served for between 2 and 5 years. If Mr Abbott makes it to the next election and assuming it is in late September 2016, he will be number 14 on the list of longest serving Prime Ministers, even if he loses.
